Germany Divided

One of the decisions that was made at the Postdam conference was to divide Germany into 4 parts...One each for US Great Britain, France, and the Soviet Union.
Berlin (in the Soviet section) was also divided into four.
The Soviet section became "East Germany" (and turned Communist) and the other 3 sections joined to become "West Germany".
